Terms of Service

These Terms govern your use of the Jrnl app and website ("Jrnl," "we," "us"). By downloading, accessing, or using Jrnl, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Jrnl.

Your privacy is covered separately in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.

You must be at least 13 years old to use Jrnl. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may only use Jrnl with the involvement of a parent or guardian. By using Jrnl you confirm you meet these requirements.

Jrnl works without an account, storing entries on your device. If you create an account to sync across devices, you are responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials secure and for activity that happens under your account. Tell us promptly at hello@jrnl.rapidcodes.io if you believe your account has been compromised.

You keep all rights to everything you write, record, and upload in Jrnl. We do not claim ownership of your journal content.

You grant us only the limited permission we need to operate the service for you: to store your content, sync it between your devices if you enable sync, back it up, and — where you have turned on AI features — transmit the relevant entry text for processing as described in our Privacy Policy. This permission exists solely to provide Jrnl to you and ends when you delete the content or your account.

We do not use your journal content to train AI models, and we do not sell it or use it for advertising.

Jrnl includes an AI assistant called Quill. Quill is off until you turn it on. Before any entry text is sent for AI processing, Jrnl tells you what will be sent and who receives it and asks for your permission. You can withdraw that permission at any time in Settings → Data & privacy → AI assistance.

AI output is generated automatically and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or unsuitable. You decide what stays on your page — every suggestion can be edited, rejected, or deleted. Do not rely on Quill for medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice.

You agree not to use AI features to generate unlawful content, to attempt to extract the underlying models or prompts, or in any way that breaches the terms of our AI provider.

You agree not to:

• Use Jrnl for anything unlawful, or to store or distribute unlawful content.
• Upload content you do not have the right to use.
• Attempt to access another user's account or data, or to probe, scan, or breach our systems.
• Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the app, except where that restriction is prohibited by law.
• Interfere with the service, including by automated scraping, excessive request volume, or circumventing usage limits.
• Resell, sublicense, or commercially redistribute Jrnl or its output as your own product.

Some features require a Jrnl Pro subscription. Subscriptions are sold through the Apple App Store and are billed to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase.

• Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
• Your Apple ID is charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period, at the price then shown in the app.
• You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID account settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
• Refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store terms; we cannot issue them directly.
• If a free trial is offered, any unused portion is forfeited when you purchase a subscription.

We may change subscription pricing. Changes apply from your next billing period and never retroactively, and we will give you notice with a chance to cancel first.

We work to keep Jrnl available and reliable, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted service. We may add, change, or remove features over time. If we make a change that materially reduces functionality you have paid for, we will tell you and offer a fair remedy.

Jrnl stores entries on your device by default. You are responsible for maintaining your own backups of anything you cannot afford to lose — through device backups, our sync feature, or the export tools in the app. We are not liable for content lost because a device was lost, reset, or damaged.

You can stop using Jrnl at any time and delete your account from within the app. We may suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these Terms, or where required by law. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will give you notice and an opportunity to put the breach right first.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Jrnl is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be error-free or that AI output will be accurate.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Jrnl will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenues, or data. Our total liability for any claim relating to Jrnl is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose, or USD 50.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for fraud, death, or personal injury caused by negligence. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

We may update these Terms as Jrnl evolves. We will update the date at the top of this page and, for material changes, notify you in the app before they take effect. Continuing to use Jrnl after that means you accept the updated Terms.

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Jrnl is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Nothing here removes consumer-protection rights you have under the mandatory law of the country you live in.

These Terms are between you and Jrnl, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for Jrnl or its content, and has no obligation to provide support for it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you. If Jrnl fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple for a refund of the purchase price; Apple has no other warranty obligation.
